Little Phil:
Listen to the clip:

"She's My Baby
"

Little Phil is not new to this business. Music has always been the driving force in his life. Early on he was deeply influenced by the soulfulness of singers like Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Johnny Taylor, James Brown, Solomon Burke, and Elvis, to name a few.
This Georgia native began his career at the age of thirteen as the front man for "Little Phil and the Night Shadows", who quickly became one of the busiest bands on the Atlanta music scene in the late sixties. Soon he was recording with the Night Shadows on Dot Records, reaching the Top 100 on the Record World and Billboard charts. These early cuts are still sold world-wide on Hottrax Records.
Little Phil's determination and unstoppable energy carried him through the musical changes of the nineties and, after some soul searching, he has come full circle back to his original musical roots.

Today Little Phil is back on track with his newly recorded breakthrough CD "Out Of The Shadows". It's on Brithom Music, and is available at CDBABY.COM. It features Georgia and Alabama Music Hall of Fame members Jack Hall and Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie, award winning blues man Theodis Ealey, and acclaimed young guitarist Mike Lowry. This CD is a southern soul must have!! Performing in any room, large or small, this first-class entertainer is a guaranteed crowd pleaser and experienced professional. Audiences are captivated by his magnetic stage presence as his band of accomplished musicians crank out an amazing fusion of blues, soul, and rock. All this makes "The Little Phil Show" an event that you won't soon forget !  The LITTLE MAN with a GIANT VOICE has truly come "OUT OF THE SHADOWS".Soulandbluesreport.com

Soulful Vocalist, Dynamic Entertainer, Gifted Songwriter... Just a few of the titles that describe the many talents of Little Phil.

In the seventies, Little Phil helped transform the southern music scene, performing at concerts and music festivals with "Kudzu" and later "Bandit". This allowed him the opportunity to share the same bill with artists such as Bob Segar, Z.Z.Top, Wet Willie, The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk, War, Steely Dan, Mother's Finest, and others.

After an automobile accident in the eighties, Phil was forced to take some time off. Still he continued to make cameo appear- ances at popular venues and night clubs to the delight of his fans.

Little Phil "Out Of The Shadows" (Coffeehouse)

*** 1/2 Stars - Now he may look a bit like a country singer but "Little Phil" is big on soul music. I mention this 'cuz of cut #4, "White Boy". He sings "Some criticize me, some surprise me/Yes, when the call me a wannabe/A little blue-eyed soul never hurt nobody/Yep, so I'm gonna do as I please/At a hole in the wall is where you'll find me/Every Friday night and Saturday too... cuz that's enough to make a white boy sing the blues!". I think this is the first song I've known that self consciously addresses the prejudice some have against a caucasian trying to sing black music. Phil sings his heart, nay soul, out with a voice that reminds me a bit of Don Henley or Joe Walsh singing deep soul... and he sells it.

The set commences with "Get Over Yourself", a rolling soul blues with a band deep in the pocket and a memorable hook. Just to show he's got the cajones, he follows that with a strong rendition of Wilson Pickett's "I Found A Love". He also nails "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" later like he's got something to prove. Then he shows he's hip to the modern Soul/Blues genre by covering an O.B. Bryant song (not exactly a household name). "Blues Party" is a funky little number that namechecks some stalwarts old and new: Clarence Carter, Mel Waiters, Marvin Sease. I really believe Phil listens to this music. I'm sure producer Rick Phillips does too (he also wrote or co-wrote the four originals here). He presents an authentic backdrop of organ, bass, guitar, drums and horns (sometimes programmed though you barely notice). "She's My Baby" is a classic soul gem and a prime example.

This project was tastefully done and these folks have good taste. Yes, Phil wants to be a soul singer but he's no "wannabe". Welcome to the club kid.
